Petty Officer 3rd Class wore an eagle perched on a branch about their specialty mark atop two chevrons; Petty Officer 2nd Class wore same but with three chevrons below; Petty Officer 1st Class wor same as Petty Officer 2nd Class but with a red diamond below the eagle with the specialty mark embroidered over the diamond. In 1893 the U.S. Navy created the rank of Chief Petty Officer with three chevrons below and three arcs atop with the specialty mark centered in between and the eagle embroidered into the three arcs. In 1897 they took away three arcs and left just one arc above three chevrons. Chevrons were red on both the blue and the white uniforms with blue eagle and specialty mark on white and white eagle and specialty marks on navy-blue wool jumpers.
